90 Is it just me or is there a definite trend for dub-influenced tunes on this site at the moment? Which is a good thing if they're done as well as this. The garage genre lends itself particularly well to dub stylings, and the execution here is of very high standard. The analogue edge to the beats is one of its strongest points and I'm delighted to see somebody grasping the important fact that drum ... More programming is probably the most important thing in garage. Second most important thing is atmosphere, which this has dripping from every bar. The moody pad chords (which are more than a little reminiscent of the Prodigy's "Outta Space") underpin it beautifully, and the little stabs, effects and sweeps give it a great ska flavour. It's almost like something The Specials might make if they were still around.
It stands up even better on the second and third listen, as there are things to pick out that you missed first time round. Overall it's got everything: great beats, great atmosphere, good melody and strong replay value. The only thing I don't like is the choice of lead synth in the second part, but that's probably personal preference and nothing more. Top tune overall. This review is helpful (+1 from 1 person) |

70 Review of: EvianGood intro, but maybe the pad is highpassed too hard? A bit long without any lower mids, but now things start filling out nicely. Rolling beats filtering in...Sweet bass! Very nice bassline. Liking the synth sounds, but that raspy stereo arpeggio was too clicky for my liking. Reminded me of audio buffer underrun in my daw :) Chill vibes, and that drum fill is cool. The "crystal" lead sound from ... More about 2:37 sounds too static, though. As if it was programmed and not played with natural, varying note velocities. That went against the organic feel of the track. From about 5:20 the tune gets a bit deeper/calmer, I really like this part. The bongo-ish percussion adds a lot of roll to the beats.
I've listened for 7 minutes now and the track hasn't gotten tedious (except the crystal sound mentioned above), which is a compliment to your arrangement skills. A lovely little vocal, guitar or other acoustic instrument sample would have been nice, but as the track stands it's a serene piece of dnb. Well done!Nobody has rated this review yet. |
