80 Review of: SlugsThere's not a lot of this type of tune on this site (or at least, not a lot of it that's as well done as this). More's the pity, because when pulled off well this kind of tune is some of the best "listening" electronic music out there. This tune does it right: a swhirling atmosphere that doesn't dominate; crunchy, well programmed beats that are satisfying in the same way walking on gravel can be; ... More a simple, dominant synth line that provides just enough of a hook; little analogue-style samples providing the added interest. All this wrapped up in high production values and the perfect length.
It really is a great little tune which feels much shorter than 5m39. Extremely enjoyable. This review is helpful (+1 from 1 person) |

80 I love the randomness in the beginning of this track. The kicks, snares and hats fall randomly, but work well off each other. The sub is THICK! Makes my ears scream, haha. Really dark atmosphere going on all around. Which is my cup o tea. The kick and snare are great. Kinda glitchy and a distorted kick has a nice frequency to it. Kinda hypnotic if you will. All around I'll drop ya an 8. It could ... More use a little bit of change up somewhere, but other than that it's a solid track. This review is helpful (+1 from 1 person) |

60 This track hangs on the balance between the smooth coldness of the pads and the warmth and crunchiness of the beats and bassline, and it does so well. The beats in particular are very warm and punchy with a slight analogue quality to them that works very well. The sub bass is a bit uninspiring, and I would have liked to hear a lot more done with the crunchy saw bass. Minimalism is an important ... More aspect of this composition, but in a minimalist arrangement the few components need to be more clever and subtle in their nuances, whereas this is all a bit predictable once the core elements have been introduced in the first part of the track.
Some more work on melodic twists to the bass, and/or perhaps bring in some other subtle sounds to break that predictability (which is also ingrained early on by the by-now very familiar oldskool ambient pad sounds that runs throughout) and this could be a great tune. As it is, it's a very pleasant listen and an accomplished, if unspectacular, piece of work. This review is helpful (+1 from 3 people) |
