Artist scorecard
Assessment: One to watch
Dappa DnB is currently on the same level as most of the artists on the site. However, they are showing strong signs of improvement and if they continue in this vein, they could be a great producer in the near future. A good prospect worth watching out for.
- Consistency: rapidly improving
- Ranking: 211 out of 477
- Output level: fairly regular (a track every 2 months)

80 It's always great to hear a drum and bass tune with real musical calibre. This is engaging from the start, with the simplistic but absorbing guitars setting the tone for a progressive, jazzy piece that unfolds its delights piece by piece. The lofi noise in the background actually works really well in providing the needed "air" for the guitar sounds, and the chord structure is simple and haunting ... More enough to repeat throughout the whole track, which it pretty much does.
My favourite aspect of the track is the beats, which have a really good live feel about them, slightly off-beat to give that humanised feel, and well programmed throughout. The little fills are very effective, and even though the beats are most likely sampled breaks, they are handled well enough here.
The strings let the tune down in two ways. Firstly, the attack is slightly too long which means that when they are playing against the guitars, they sound very off-beat. I know this is jazz-influenced, but you just wouldn't hear that in any real jazz ensemble. They are also melodically very basic, doing nothing more than following the pattern of the guitars when they could have done so much more. A real shame.
Structurally the tune is very well paced, building up slowly and then breaking down gently... until the very final bar when it cuts out very abruptly and unexpectedly - and not in a clever way either!
I'm sure on the production side the artist could have done more to really make this sparkle but it's fine as it is and has other weaknesses which need more attention than the production. If those strings were better and that ending was tweaked this could be a classic. As it is, this is a very enjoyable tune which I would love to more in the style of.This review is helpful (+1 from 1 person) |

80 Very interesting take on this song song, the constant beat is kinda annoying yet perfect at the same time. It all works very well, especially when the chorus kicks in. and the part from around 2:10 gave this song a more interesting sound, rather than these over the top drops people seem to love at the moment. Great remix bro, after listening to all of it, it was hard to fault :) This review is helpful (+2 from 2 people) |

60 having the orchestral intro by itself is a nice way to start the song. however, when the drums first kick in around 0:30, the fullness of the orchestra sample (it's the whole orchestra playing) with the sudden full drums sounds abrupt and disjointed -- too much going on and the volume levels are off. it can sound much more natural -- I felt like there needed to be a smoother introduction and more ... More integration at this point. You hear this intergration perfectly at 1:36 and it's beautiful -- you have some stabs from the tubas, some short, pointed clips of a full orchestra hit, and a badass bassline and some driving drums that meshes really well! this should be happening in the beginning too.
otherwise, production value is good on a cool idea and some really nice drums and bass. but such a cool idea deserves better execution -- that intro turned me off and the much more sophisticated integration at 1:30 is what kept me listening. make the whole song shine like that. This review is helpful (+1 from 1 person) |
